We start by selecting only Specialty Grade Arabica coffees. From there, we take it as our responsibility to ensure we are purchasing ethically by buying only from transparent, sustainable sources and choosing organics whenever we can. We at Perks! always strive to do the most good. Whether we create impact by purchasing Women Produced coffees from our partners in the Congo, Fair Trade Certified, Rainforest Alliance, or Bird Friendly coffees, we ensure that our purchasing power goes where our hearts are.From here, we spend time in the roastery where we experiment with each new coffee. We roast it several ways, then: cupping, tasting, smelling, and sharing with our friends to make sure we’ve got the best possible balance of flavor complexity and sweetness. When we’re confident we’ve got the best product we possibly can, we proudly offer it to you. Details: Women Produced, Fair Trade, OrganicInitially formed from several independent women’s associations, Rwanda’s SholiCooperative is founded on female empowerment.⁠⁠“I decided to start up the cooperative to help women in this area” explains PresidentJeanne, “because for many years, we practically lived in isolation. Our husbands controlled thefinances, and it was even frowned upon for us to leave the house. It took many yearsand a lot of hard work and effort, but it was worth it, because now we understand themarket for our coffee, and we have more freedom–financially and socially.” Now, nearly half (157) of Sholi’s 386 members are women, including two of the five board members.⁠For natural process coffees, Sholi selects and identifies the highest-quality cherries thatarrive at the central washing station. The cherries are sorted again, floated, and movedto the drying tables. After three or four days, they cover the dried cherries for 24-30 hours to develop the flavor. The cherries are monitored and continue to dry up to 30-35 days depending on the weather.The Cooperative received its Fairtrade certification in 2015 and Rainforest Alliancecertification in 2016, and Organic certification in 2020.
